Arsenal told what to expect from Mari

Arsenal have been told what to expect from potential signing Pablo Mari, by South American football expert Tim Vickery.

Centre back Mari has been strongly linked with a move to the Gunners this summer – with a £7.5million deal with Flamengo for him agreed and then reneged this month.

Speaking to TalkSport, Vickery said: “I’ve been droning on about him to anyone who will listen for the past few months, because I think Manchester City missed a beat with this one.

“For me, in that Flamengo side that coasted its way to the Brazilian championship, won the South American title and gave Liverpool a game in the Club World Cup final, I think he was the most important player.

“He’s by no way the most glamorous, but that front four with all the goals being scored by Gabriel Barbosa and Bruno Henrique, it wouldn’t have worked had the team not been able to defend with a high line – and Pablo Mari was the man behind all of that, he was superb.”

Sheff Utd eye up surprise Berge swoop

Sheffield United are on course to pull off a transfer coup with the £20million capture of Genk midfielder Sander Berge.

The Norwegian 21-year-old impressed in the Champions League against Liverpool and has been admired by a number of clubs, including West Ham.

Sheffield United, however, are so far the only club to have made a firm offer for him.

Berge has 20 caps for Norway and is highly-regarded throughout European football. His club’s Champions League football comes after he helped Genk to win the title last season.

Genk initially intended to agree a deal now with the Norway international staying with them on loan.

But Blades boss Chris Wilder wants him this month as Sheffield United try to make a push for what would be a shock European place.

Wolves edge closer to double transfer

Wolves are set to finalise a £1.6million deal for French starlet Enzo Loiodice and are still intent on splashing out on Olympiakos winger Daniel Podence.

Loiodice, 19, was at Molineux for a medical yesterday and will go into Wanderers’ U23s set-up.

The midfielder has played 21 times in Ligue 1 for Dijon – who are 17th – and is a France U20 international.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo , whose side are into the Europa League knock-out stages, is continuing to pursue Podence, which is edging closer.

Wolves want former Portugal under-21 international Podence, 24, for a fee which could reach £20million. Olympiakos omitted Podence from their squad for Sunday’s goalless draw away at AEK Athens.

They are now willing to let Podence go if their £20m valuation is met.

The Greek club’s director of communications Nikos Gavalas said: “Olympiakos is famous for tough negotiations on football players that are going to be sold.”

Podence’s agent Jorge Mendes has close ties to Wolves’ Chinese owners Fosun.

He also used to play with Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio at Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon.

If the deal is wrapped up in time, Podence could make his debut in Saturday’s trip to Manchester United.

Wanderers also have an interest in Norwich’s former Portuguese striker Nelson Oliveira, 28, who plays for fellow Greek side AEK and has nine goals this term.

Cutrone blames Wolves boss for failing in England

Patrick Cutrone has blamed Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo for his failure to make it in England.

The Italian international striker, 22, joined Premier League Wanderers last summer from AC Milan for £16million.

But he made a quick return to Italy this month when he joined Fiorentina on an 18-month loan.

He made nine starts for Wolves in all competitions and scored three goals in 24 appearances in total.

But Curtone feels his prospects at Wolves was undermined by Nuno’s preference for prolific Mexican Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota, who linked up so well last season.

Cutrone said: “I went to Wolverhampton with a lot of enthusiasm.

“The fans loved me, they dedicated a chant to me.“After all, I scored three goals in the few minutes I played.

“But I had a coach that preferred to focus on the ones who had been loyal to him.”

Ferdinand makes Mari demand to Arsenal board

Rio Ferdinand has instructed the Arsenal board to give Mikel Arteta the cash to sign Pablo Mari to shore up his Gunners defence.

Arsenal have leaked goals all season, which has seen them throw away valuable points against the likes of Sheffield United and Brighton in recent months.

Arteta has steaded the ship somewhat since being handed the reins, but the Spaniard needs new recruits, and has identified Mari as his top January target.

The problem facing Arteta is that the Arsenal board want to bring the defender in on loan, while Flamengo are only willing to let him go if the deal is permament.

The stand-off is threatening to derail the transfer altogether, and has prompted Ferdinand to instruct the Arsenal board to back their new boss.

Under-pressure West ham are hoping the 24-year-old Czech Republic international will be the first of up to four signings before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Barca want Aubameyang – and Martinelli form might sway deal

Barcelona want to sign Arsenal’s top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Spanish giants are targeting a new frontman with Luis Suarez injured and see Aubameyang, 30, as the perfect candidate ahead of Friday night’s transfer deadline.

The Gabon marksman, currently suspended, is by far Arsenal’s top scorer with 16 goals in all competitions this season – but he has yet to sign a new deal and shows little sign of doing so.

Barca fear Arsenal would still value Aubameyang at over £50million, a price they wouldn’t be prepared to pay with under 18 months left on his contract.

The emergence of 18-year-old Gabriel Martinelli, scorer of 10 goals from his 21 appearances this season, could influence the thinking of the Gunners’ hierarchy.

He has not played a minute since then, despite returning to fitness, and he has been an unused substitute in four of the Gunners’ last five games in all competitions.

Ceballos is thought to want to cut the loan short and return to Spain, but according to Marca Madrid are reluctant to allow him join another top La Liga team, especially as Valencia could still face them in the Copa del Rey.

Sanchez gets another chance

Manchester United are set to give on-loan forward Alexis Sanchez another chance to prove himself at the club, according to reports.

Sanchez joined Serie A club Inter Milan on a season-long loan during the summer after a nightmare 18 months at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old failed to impress for the Red Devils following his move from Arsenal in January 2018, scoring just five goals in 45 appearances.

Although he had not been expected to play for United again, The Daily Star reports that the club have made a U-turn and are now planning to welcome the Chile international back at the end of the season.

According to the publication, United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has informed Sanchez and his agent that they have no intention of letting him join Inter or any other club on a permanent basis.

United suffer Cavani blow

Man Utd have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Edinson Cavani as the Uruguayan edges towards a move to Atletico Madrid.

The PSG striker is reportedly on the verge of completing his switch to the Wanda Metropolitano, and a deal could be finalised on Monday.

Cavani’s brother – who also acts as his agent – is said to be in Madrid working through the final negotiations of the star’s contract.

AS report Cavani’s team have stated “everything will be decided” before the day is out, although it is not known whether that refers just to his personal terms.

Atletico Madrid were believed to be haggling over a fee for the 32-year-old, after PSG demanded £12.7million for his services.

Chelsea ‘keeping tabs’ on Piatek

Chelsea are poised to launch a late challenge to Spurs for the signing of AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek.

The Blues are switching to the 24-year-old Poland International with first choice Edinson Cavani of PSG closing in on a move to Atletico Madrid.

Piatek had been in negotiations with Spurs but the north Londoners moved on to Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose after failing to agree an initial loan deal with Milan.

As the transfer deadline approaches, however – and with Jose priced out of a move to Spurs by Socieded – Spurs are set to return to Piatek.

Now, though, Chelsea are interested as Frank Lampard hunts more firepower ahead of the second half of the season. West Ham have expressed an interest but Piatek has rejected them in favour of a move to a bigger club.

Although Piatek has managed only four goals in 18 outings for Stefano Pioli’s Milan side, he had an excellent campaign last season, with 19 goals for Genoa to earn his move to Milan where he scored eleven times during the second half of the campaign.

Benitez ‘in line for Newcastle return’

Rafa Benitez could be in line for a shock return to Newcastle if the club are taken over by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Spanish coach remains a fan favourite at St James’s Park following his time at the club, which only ended in the summer.

He is currently managing Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang, but has been repeatedly linked with a move back to England.

That could now become a reality should Prince Salman complete his £340million takeover bid, according to the Sun.

They report that Salman is already working on a deal to bring Benitez back to the club to replace current Newcastle boss Steve Bruce.

Hammers move in on Soucek

West Ham are on course to land £17million Slavia Prague midfielder Tomas Soucek.

The under-pressure east Londoners are hoping the 24-year-old Czech Republic international will be the first of up to four signings before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Soucek has scored 12 times in 26 appearances this season with two of his goals coming in the Champions League against Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

He fits the profile being sought by Hammers boss David Moyes who wants to build a younger, more dynamic squad and could yet make a second, late loan bid for Chelsea’s Ross Barkley.

Spurs academy right-back Kyle Walker-Peters is also on his hit list to fill in for the injured Ryan Fredericks.

But West Ham could yet be frustrated by Crystal Palace or Southampton with both clubs also keen on the 22-year-old.

Moyes had targeted Nottingham Forest’s right-back Matty Cash but West Ham have so far failed with a £12million bid. A new striker is being sought with the Irons still retaining an interest in Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud

They are under pressure to make signings before the end of the week with angry fans planning protests before and after Wednesday’s home game against Liverpool.

The Hammers are outside the Premier League’s relegation zone on goal difference ahead of Saturday’s game against Brighton and trips to Manchester City and Liverpool to follow.
